about
I’m a Seattle-based designer and developer. I’ve worked with most of the extant web technologies, and the ones I don’t know I can pick up. I can design your site, build the backend, run the server, and fix pretty much anything that can go wrong with any flavor of computer. I don’t do Flash, and I avoid proprietary tech for your sake and mine.
I’ve used a variety of different development platforms, but recently I’ve been relying on Movable Type and WordPress rather than a more powerful framework because, while these packages were originally designed as blog engines, the developers have added an array of useful features over the years, and now they provide a cost-effective solution for developing and managing small and midsize sites. If your project requires something more flexible, I can do that too.
My approach to design derives from my understanding of a site on the internet as a tool rather than a aesthetic display. Sites are a way to provide a prospective visitor with a particular set of services, and everything in the design should work toward that goal. The best designs on the internet are often those that millions of people use as part of their daily lives. These sites generally adopt a simple, elegant aesthetic that never gets in the way of itself.
I’m available for contract jobs and short-term freelance work. I also do other stuff.

Competitive Advantage is a tutoring company offering various services to students at all grade levels. The client wanted a new site, with a softer, rounded, more colorful design, and a CMS on the back-end. We decided to use WordPress, because it’s a very cost-effective development tool for a site of this scale. I also ended up using a bit of Flash to make the animation on the index page, which I’m not happy about, but it was necessary for this site.
